Setting: The world of Avatar is comprised of four different nations; the Water Tribes, the Fire Nation, the Air Nomads, and the Earth Kingdom.
The Water Tribes are the homes of the waterbenders and the rest of their people, and they are located in the North Pole, the South Pole, and the Foggy Swamp in the Earth Kingdom. The Northern and Southern Water Tribes are both chiefdoms, and they usually keep themselves isolated from the rest of the world, but it is not unheard of for members of the Water Tribes to leave their homes and travel the world.
The Fire Nation is the home of firebenders and their people, which is on a group of islands in the western side of the world. The Fire Nation has a very warm, tropical climate with many beaches and small, volcanic islands near the mainland. It is also the most technologically advanced of all four nations, with access to both natural gas and steam power. The nation itself is a monarchy, although in more recent years it could be more accurately described as a dictatorship.
The Air Nomads were all airbenders, and while they were nomadic, they had four temples located around the world, two for women and two for men. They are run by councils of elders, and the temples were used to both raise their children and handle government matters. The Air Nomads were incredibly spiritual, and believed that all forms of life were sacred. They refused to harm any living being, and did not have any sort of military force due to their peaceful beliefs and the desire to do no harm. Unfortunately, all Air Nomads – save for Avatar Aang – are long dead because of the genocide committed by the Fire Nation.
Finally there’s the Earth Kingdom, which is home to Earthbenders and their people, and is also the largest and most diverse nation of them all. It is essentially one giant continent with some islands thrown in here and there, and contains deserts, mountains, grasslands, and forests. There are villages and cities in the Earth Kingdom, with the largest one being the capitol, Ba Sing Se. The Earth Kingdom is a monarchy, and is ruled by the Earth King, although other cities and villages have their own leaders and function on their own, or have been taken over by the Fire Nation and serve as new colonies.
Bending itself is an integral part of all cultures in the world of Avatar, as each nation has a different style of bending that is tied to a specific element. There are five types of bending altogether, but the main four are all tied to the elements. There is firebending, earthbending, airbending, waterbending, and finally, energybending.
Firebending is used by the people of the Fire Nation, and it is one of the most destructive forms of bending. Firebenders are able to control and manipulate flames from external sources, but they are also capable of creating their own fire as well. The first known firebenders were dragons, and the people of the Fire Nation learned how to control and create fire from them. Since it is such a powerful element, firebenders must be able to keep a constant control over their energy and keep themselves in balance in battle, so they don’t lose control. Extremely skilled firebenders have also been known to create stronger, hotter, blue flames, and they could bend lightning as well. Firebenders are also strongest during the day when the sun is shining bright, and grow stronger the closer a large source of fire comes to the planet.
Earthbending is used by the people of the Earth Kingdom. Earthbenders can control and shoot the earth, so anything made out of stone is essentially under an earthbender’s control. It requires the users to form a strong connection to the earth, and wait for the right time to strike. It calls for a great deal of stability and strength, and so earthbenders work by standing their ground in a fight and work to completely overwhelm any opponents they face. The first Earthbenders were badgermoles, and the lovers Oma and Shu were the first to learn Earthbending from them, using their abilities to create tunnels to see one another. Earthbending can also be used for construction purposes, and has been used to create tunnels and cities in the past. There are also derivative forms of earthbending, which are sandbending and metalbending, the latter of which is tied to seismic sense, a sub-skill of earthbending that allows the user to “see” their environment through vibrations in the ground.
Waterbending is practiced by the people of the Water Tribes, and it allows people to not only control and manipulate how water moves, but they are also able to freeze and melt it at will. Waterbenders are adaptable, like their element, and learn to work with their environments to the best of their abilities. A waterbender’s skill mostly lies in their ability to focus on their energy and the flow and movement of their bodies, the amount of water nearby could also be either a great advantage or disadvantage to a waterbender. However, even with little water, the most talented waterbenders can find and manipulate the water in plants, the humidity of the air, or even the water in people’s bodies. (The latter being a form of waterbending known as ‘bloodbending’.) The skills of a waterbender are also important, as their abilities can be used to heal people who have been injured. Unlike the other bending styles, the first waterbender was not an animal, but the moon. The first waterbenders watched how the moon pushed and pulled the tides, and learned from that. A waterbender’s bending is stronger at night, but their power reaches its full potential during the full moon.
Airbending is the bending style used by the Air Nomads, and unlike the rest of the world where there are both benders and nonbenders, all Air Nomads were airbenders. Airbenders can use the air around them to their advantage, which enables them to create massive gusts of wind, shields of wind, and even fly using gliders – working with the air to provide both lift and thrust. A large part of airbending is speed, as it works with momentum and evasion, putting a big focus on defense rather than offense. The first known airbenders were the sky bison, and the Air Nomads learned from them.
Then comes energybending, which is manipulating the energy within a person’s body, and it allows the user to either remove or restore someone’s bending. It is an extremely dangerous ability, because if the user’s energy isn’t pure, then they’ll be destroyed. Only the Avatar has been shown using this technique, and very few have actually managed to use it.
One of the most important and powerful people in the world is the Avatar; the human incarnation of the spirit of the planet. They are able to learn all four styles of bending, they act as a bridge between the human world and the Spirit World, and they are meant to bring balance to the planet. The Avatar also exists in a cycle, and when one dies, they are reborn in another nation to continue the cycle. The Avatar cycle itself goes in the order of Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and then Air Nomads, and the cycle also determines which order the Avatar must master the elements. (With the first being the element native to their home.)
Perhaps the strongest gift an Avatar has is the Avatar State, which is the summoning of all the power and knowledge of previous Avatars, giving them incredible power and bending abilities. This can be triggered willingly, or it can be brought forward as a reaction to extreme danger or severe emotional distress. Even if the Avatar has not learned all four elements yet, if they enter the Avatar State, they’re able to bend all elements with ease. However, the Avatar State has one massive weakness; every past incarnation of the Avatar resides in the body of the current Avatar while in the Avatar State, so if the Avatar is killed in that state, then they all die. If that were to happen, the Avatar would die completely, and the cycle would come to an end.
Spirits and the supernatural also play a part in just about everything in this world. While they aren’t the most prominent feature of the series, their presence is still a key part of it all. Most spirits reside in the Spirit World, which is basically another reality that exists alongside the world of Avatar. The Spirit World is home to all spirits, and all past lives of the Avatar. The Avatar is the only one who is able to travel freely between worlds, although bending appears to have no real effect in the Spirit World.
It is extremely difficult for humans to pass through and enter the Spirit World, although it’s certainly possible. The only known ways for humans to come and go is if they latch onto a spirit and get carried over, or to find a time or place where the line between the human world and the spirit world becomes blurred, such as during the Solstice or in the Spirit Oasis. Spirits, however, seem to be capable of crossing over into the human world with more ease, although it doesn't happen very often.
This section also requires small history lesson to explain part of how the world presently works, so unfortunately it’s a bit of a necessary evil.
100 years in the past, Fire Lord Sozin plotted to take control of the world, and eventually began to set up colonies in the Earth Kingdom, which lead to Avatar Roku confronting him and defeating him. He didn’t stop, however, and years later he left Roku to die in a volcanic eruption so he could continue with his plans.
He then waited 12 years for the arrival of a comet, an event which greatly increases a firebender’s power, to deliver the first blow to the other nations of the world and to begin the Air Nomad genocide. Since the next Avatar was going to be an Air Nomad, the Fire Nation plotted to completely wipe them out in order to end the Avatar cycle once and for all. The Air Temples were attacked and all the Airbenders were slaughtered, and any that had managed to escape the first attack were hunted down and killed as the time progressed. In the end, the only Air Nomad left was Avatar Aang, who had escaped and trapped himself in ice a short while before the attack.
Ever since then, the Fire Nation has been spreading across the world, attacking cities and villages in an effort to claim them as their territory. In spite of their efforts, however, there were some places that the Fire Nation never managed to invade at first, but such troubles never stopped them, though. The Fire Nation continued to expand their numbers, and constantly attacked other cities and villages in the Earth Kingdom, and raided the Southern Water Tribe to the point where there was only a small handful of people left.
Even after the awakening of Avatar Aang 100 years later, the Fire Nation is still growing strong, and they’re getting closer and closer to victory over all nations. This has cast a sort of shadow over the people of the world, both in and out of areas that have been conquered by the Fire Nation. People are left feeling afraid of when and where the Fire Nation will attack next, or if they can even be defeated – even with the return of the Avatar. Still, while people may live in fear, they haven’t completely given up hope. Many are resisting the Fire Nation’s attacks, and are willing to fight back against them. There are people will do anything it takes to prevent them from causing any more harm, until Avatar Aang can find a way to stop the Fire nation and put an end to the war.
As for Yue herself, she’s spent her whole life tucked away in the confines of the Northern Water Tribe. Located in the North Pole, the Northern Water Tribe rests on the shores of the northern sea and is surrounded by massive walls of ice. Nearly everything in the city has been created by waterbenders, who have used their abilities to construct buildings, walls, and canals with ice and water.
The Northern Water Tribe has also been isolated from the rest of the world for the past 100 years, and has managed to avoid being taken over by the Fire Nation, thanks to the treacherous terrain of the tundra and the system of water-locked canals within the city. The isolation from the rest of the world, however, is not always a good thing. While the people of the Northern Water Tribe are aware of some of the goings-on in the world, they don’t know all of the details. This sometimes leaves them ignorant of certain developments in the world or the war.
It also functions as a patriarchal monarchy, lead by a chief and a small council of advisors. They also have very strict gender roles in the north; with men acting as leaders, lawmakers, and warriors, whereas women are not allowed to rule, learn how to fight, or even use waterbending for purposes other than healing.
Beyond that, the Northern Tribe also houses the Spirit Oasis, the most sacred place in the entire North Pole. It acts as a sort of gateway to the Spirit World, and unlike the frozen outside, the Spirit Oasis is warm, grassy, and calm. Near the beginning of time, apparently Tui and La (the spirits of the moon and ocean) became mortal, spending their lives as koi and swimming together for eternity. The water of the Spirit Oasis is also much stronger than any other water for healing, as it is capable of resurrecting people from the dead.
Personality: "The moon spirit is a gentle, loving lady. She rules the sky with compassion. And… lunar goodness!"
Yue is the princess of the Northern Water Tribe, and acts as such. She is graceful, composed, and has a rather serious demeanour. Yue isn't apathetic or stoic by any means, but she is perfectly capable of maintaining the calm, elegant, and dignified manner that is normally expected of a Princess. However, she is still an emotional young woman, and it isn’t terribly rare for her to allow these feelings to shine through. The most prominent would be whenever Yue experiences negative emotions such as sadness, anger, or guilt, and it isn't difficult for her feelings to sway her behaviour and actions.
Also, while it is shown much less often, Princess Yue appears to have something of an impulsive and playful side to her. Her impulsive side became obvious when she first kissed Sokka, and her playful behaviour was shown to be much more subtle and underhanded when she briefly flirted with him during their ride on Appa.
Of course, while Yue's actions are often influenced by her emotions, she's also been shown to remain calm and mostly level-headed in dangerous or grim situations. If something bad is happening, Yue will certainly show some level of fear, confusion, or desperation, but she'll do her best to try and help. She's not a warrior or a healer, but rather than stand around and not do anything, she'd prefer to try and help in any way that she can, even if it's just directing someone or providing some kind of information.
Yue is also quite sheltered, and while she is not naive in regards to what is going on in the world, she isn't knowledgeable, either. Due to the nature of the environment surrounding the Northern Water Tribe, they have been isolated from the rest of the world and free from Fire Nation attacks for the past 100 years. This, combined with the fact she has never left her homeland, has resulted in Yue living a rather sheltered life. Thanks to this lack of exposure, Yue has developed a certain curiosity in regards to the world outside of her tribe. When faced with someone not from the Northern Water Tribe, Yue will occasionally ask for details about their home and the places they've been, and will listen with great interest whenever they tell stories of their travels.
Yue is fairly spiritual as well. She frequently talks about the spirits of the moon and ocean, although she doesn't quite understand many of the details of spirits and the nature of the spirit world. (As seen when she asked Katara what Aang was doing while he tried to cross over to the spirit world.) Even so, it is likely that Yue's spirituality and interest in spirits stems from the moon spirit saving her life when she was a baby, which established a connection between her and the moon.
Besides that, Princess Yue is very caring and compassionate individual. While it is possible for one to become spoiled and rude after living all their life in the lap of luxury, such has not happened to her. She makes a point to be kind to nearly everyone she meets, and always treats the people she's around with a good amount of warmth and respect. More than anything else, though, Yue also has a great deal of love for her tribe and its people. Her love for them is one that is almost completely selfless. She is completely dedicated to her duties and to her people, and everything she does is done for them.
As Princess, Yue has a strong influence over them, and she does everything in her power to make sure they’re content. She does have feelings that she considers selfish, but in the end she almost always puts the wants and needs of her tribe over her own, even at the cost of her own happiness. Of course, Yue's love and care doesn't only extend to her people. She has a large amount of compassion for the world she lives in, and regardless of what happens, she would do anything she could to ensure its safety.
Yue's reaction to being brought back to Tu Shanshu would be confusion, more than anything else. She wouldn't remember returning to her world, but it would be clear to her that she had been gone for some period of time - even if she couldn't remember leaving.
Appearance:
Abilities:She whips her hair back and forth.
Despite having some of the Moon Spirit's life force inside of her, Yue is a non-bender, and doesn't have any special abilities. She's a teenage girl that has been raised as a princess in a society that only allows men to be warriors, so she's received no combat training, has no knowledge of how to defend herself, or anything like that. As far as physical strength goes, she'd actually be quite weak.
The only thing of note is, again, the fact that Yue shares the Moon Spirit's life force. She was born extremely sick with no known cure, but was saved after her father prayed to the spirits and placed her in the water of the Spirit Oasis. While she was given no powers, the Moon Spirit gave her a second chance at life.
Inventory: Just the clothes on her back.
Suite: She would feel most at home in the Water Sector. Two floors, if possible.
In-Character Samples:
Third Person: Yue had spent most of the time in a daze – too shocked, too drained to properly focus on anything.
She remembered Iroh’s recognition of her gift, and Sokka trying to hold her back. She remembered placing her hands on the koi, and then nothing.
Only darkness... for a little while, at least.
Then came the feeling of weakness and exhaustion, and Yue struggled to concentrate on exactly what was happening. The people speaking to her looked human, but something about them didn’t feel right. She didn’t have the energy to try and figure out what it was, though. They went on about how she may not have been dead –
(But she was, she remembered.)
– and how this place was ‘In-Between’. Yue didn’t understand what they meant, not really, but she knew that she was no longer in her homeland, and these people were there to help. Or at least, it seemed like they were there to help. One of them held her steady while they made their way to the cart – (were those extra fingers?) – to keep her from stumbling too much.
The ride itself was long, and somehow managed to leave Yue feeling even more tired than before. The people were content to talk amongst themselves, which was fine, as it gave her more time to think about what had just happened to her.
Tu Vishan... In-Between... she kept on thinking about that and everything else they told her, but she still couldn’t understand it. If this was somewhere between life and death, then why was she here? Yue knew she was dead, and yet somehow she was brought here. Occasionally she would speak up and ask them questions...
“What did you mean when you said ‘In-Between’?”
“This isn’t the Spirit World, is it?”
“Why am I here?”
“Is anyone else from my Tribe here?”
... But they were almost always met with the same answer: “That’s the Emperor’s business.”
By the time they had arrived at their destination, Yue had given up on trying to get any more answers out of them. However, any feelings of annoyance were temporarily put behind her once she noticed her surroundings. Almost immediately, she got out of the cart and stared.
There was water everywhere. Water, canals, boats, and fountains... for a moment, she was reminded of her home.
The princess knelt down at the edge of one of the canals, reaching out to touch the surface of the water with her fingertips. The water wasn’t freezing cold like it was in the north. No walls or streets of ice, either. Whatever similarities there were to the Northern Water Tribe, they weren’t enough.
This place wasn’t Yue’s home, nor would it ever be, but what choice did she have?
It would have to do for now.
Network: [Yue has been here for a little while now, and she's starting to get used to it. This place isn't the Spirit World - in fact, it's not a part of her own world at all - and while she may be dead back home, this is another chance at life for her.
It's something she struggles with, but if she's here, then she may as well try to enjoy herself. Especially since she doesn't even know how long she'll be here. So, that's why she decides to make a request over the network that day.]
Does anyone here know how to swim? [Wait, no...] I mean, would anyone that knows how to swim be willing to show me?
There's water everywhere where I'm from, but it has always been too cold to try swimming properly. So... I never actually learned how to do it.
I don't really have much to pay people in exchange, but I would be very grateful! [Yeah, she knows that probably won't be enough. But hey, might as well put it out there.]

Appearance:
